Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita’s Personality
Macaws are a wonderful companion bird. They are friendly and intelligent. They are the perfect addition to families with a variety of members. They can easily become bored and discover ways to entertain themselves even if their owners aren't engaging with them enough often. If they are not socialized properly macaws may become aggressive and even bite. It is essential that boundaries are clearly defined so that the macaw does not feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general, are active birds who enjoy playing, interacting and climb. They should spend at least 2 to 3 hours each day in the outdoors to keep their minds stimulated and for physical exercise. They enjoy playing games as well as listening to music and learning tricks. They love visiting playgrounds and parks as well as hiking, local eateries and bars. In addition to being a fun pet they also make loving companions for children.
Despite their adoring appearance however, these birds can be loud and can be a nuisance for those living close by. They can be heard making ear-splitting screeches and loud cries that can be annoying to those living in condos or apartments.
Another interesting trait of this particular species is that it is monomorphic meaning males and females are hard to distinguish. Due to this the only way to determine sex is via DNA testing. Once sex is known pairing of the birds can be attempted and breeding can begin.
Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases and tricks. This can be a long process and the owner must be patient and understand that this is a challenging task. Positive reinforcement can help accelerate the process and help correct any behavior issues.
Lolita's Care
For a long time activists have been lobbying for Lolita's retirement from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's return to the wild, activists and marine biologists believed that Lolita might suffer the same fate. However, she was never given the chance to go back to sea.
Lolita's captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her by putting her through head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and harming her immune system. They also place her in a tank one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.
In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, pledged to come up with an arrangement with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her eventually to open water. The plan would have included a facility in Washington's west coast, in which she could reside for the remainder of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and be was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.
If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild killer whales are highly social animals that are bonded with family members until they die. Lolita who has been in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is being released into the wild. Activists across the country including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network, have called for her to retire from Seaquarium's stage and eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet
A balanced diet is essential for the health of a blue and gold macaw. These beautiful birds require premium food and plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits and whole grains. In the wild, a macaw that is well-fed can expect to live for up to 60 years. In addition, this majestic bird requires plenty of room to move around and exercise.

Lolita's Health

It is not known what health issues are affecting the orca, since her captor is not required to share the information. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies collected from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease often plays an integral role in the deaths of orcas kept in captivity.
Despite the ongoing health concerns of Lolita many are hopeful that she may be closer than ever to a wild life. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has pledged to transfer the whale from her tank to her natural waters in the Pacific.
The move comes after years of public pressure as well as from PETA and PETA, which demanded that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea in which she can swim in the ocean and even reunite with the orca thought to be her mother. Unfortunately these plans came late for the whale that was so beloved, who died on Friday of what was believed to be a renal problem.
